Acupressure is a technique where pressure is applied on several acupuncture points on the body usually with your fingertips or hands with significant benefits.
Acupressure, same as acupuncture:
- stimulates meridians, a net of pathways in the body where energy(qi) flows, improving the flow of qi
- stimulates the nervous system
- improves circulation
- stimulates our body mechanism to heal by itself
- produces relaxation
It has shown to be beneficial for the management of:
- nausea associated with pregnancy or due to chemotherapy or radiotherapy
- menstrual pain
- Labor pain
- low back pain
- other types of pain (neck, knee, shoulder, etc)
- pain due to trauma
- anxiety
- insomnia
- fatigue
- difficulty breathing
- and others.
Moreover, acupressure is completely safe and there are no side effects. It is usually administered by an acupuncturist but it can also be self-administered. It is so easy to perform! Once you know where to locate the acupoints that will bring you relief, you can stimulate them throughout the day multiple times.
As I mentioned before, acupressure is generally done using the fingertips, the thumbs, or the whole hand. Gentle but firm massage or pressure on the acupoint is sustained for about 30 seconds to a minute. During acupressure, some areas will be more sore than others but it should never be painful.
Many acupuncturists use acupressure on children and also on patients who are very sensitive or afraid of needles.
Acupuncture triggers a stronger and more permanent effect on your nervous system but acupressure is still beneficial and valuable, more now during the pandemic because of social distancing.
